Brioche and challah bread are the best French toast. You should be able to find both in your grocer’s bakery or bread aisle, but brioche is likely more readily available.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8 slices challah, brioche, or white bread
- 1/2 cup maple syrup, warmed
INSTRUCTIONS
- If you have purchased a whole loaf of bread rather than a pre-sliced loaf, slice your bread to desired thickness and set aside.
- Combine cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar in a small bowl
- In another dish, whisk together milk and eggs and then whisk in cinnamon mixture
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat
- Dunk bread slices into your egg mixture. Don’t oversoak them. Dunk for a few seconds and allow excess to drip off. The goal is coated, not soaked!
- Fry bread in melted butter until golden brown, flip to the other side and repeat
- Serve with warm syrup
Optional: Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with fresh strawberries.
